Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney has withdrawn from the England squad with a knee injury.

The Football Association announced he will return to Old Trafford and won’t be available for England’s friendly against Spain on Tuesday after missing Monday’s training session.

Interim manager Gareth Southgate had previously stated that Rooney would not have featured against Spain even if he was fit.

If Rooney isn’t able to get fit before the Arsenal clash at the weekend, Jose Mourinho would be left without both strikers, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic is currently suspended.

Jose Mourinho could be forced into playing either Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford as the central striker against Arsene Wenger’s men on Saturday at Old Trafford, but after Rashford’s last showing against Arsenal in February, I’m sure it won’t be much of an issue.

Rashford’s talents have been wasted out wide, as he has proven each time he’s played in the central position, but with Ibrahimovic’s arrival in the summer, the pressure has been taken off the 19-year-old’s shoulders.

Martial on the other hand, hasn’t been in great form recently and the Arsenal clash represents the perfect opportunity for him to showcase his talent to Mourinho and cement his place back in the starting XI.
