Samir Nasri: Jose Mourinho should play Paul Pogba in this position at Man United

Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri believes Jose Mourinho needs to play Paul Pogba at a fixed No.8 midfield position at Manchester United.

Pogba, since re-joining Man United for a world record £89m fee in August, has struggled to locate his best position under Mourinho.

The 53-year-old has deployed Pogba as a deep-lying midfielder, a No.10 and a No.8 alongside the likes of Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Marouane Fellaini.

Nasri, currently on loan at Sevilla, believes Pogba should be deployed in a less-restricted No.8 role.

“In terms of pure talent, he’s a phenomenon. But his performances on the pitch still aren’t worthy of his talent,” he said.

“In terms of quality, but not yet in terms of what he produces, he makes me think of Yaya Toure. He’s a player who can get forward.

“He has one problem: He still hasn’t found his position. At United, they have dragged him about all over the place — behind the striker, a little deeper, as a No. 8. When he plays as a No. 8 on the right, people say he should be on the left when I think they’re the same thing. He’s lacking that little something.”

Adjusting to life in England, as the world’s most expensive player, as the side’s nucleus, with the footballing world scrutinising your every move is, to say the least, pretty difficult. And constantly adapting to new roles, new approaches and new mindsets every week only compounds the difficulty when it comes to fully settling in for Pogba.

That said, with Michael Carrick acting as the reliable base of midfield, alongside the perennially tenacious, energetic Ander Herrera, Pogba’s role as a free-roaming No.8 has given rise to his best performances at United so far, and one suspects that this will be the Frenchman’s chosen role at United this season.
