The 26-year-old’s current contract expires in 2019 but the suggestion by Mike McGrath is that Jose Mourinho intends to keep him at Man United despite the recent situation surrounding Smalling’s fitness.
Smalling was left out of the team to face Chelsea but Mourinho publicly criticised him, questioning whether certain players in United’s squad had the right attitude towards playing for the club. Since, there has been some confusion over whether he has a broken toe but that’s been what the media has portrayed.
For me, I think Smalling is the second best centre-back at the club behind Eric Bailly. His real breakthrough came under Louis van Gaal who helped turn him into one of the best English centre-backs in the Premier League and although he’s regressed under Mourinho with some poor performances, clearly Jose sees something in him.
I’d keep Smalling at the club as well as Bailly and Daley Blind, sell Marcos Rojo and bring in another centre-back or have faith in Axel Tuanzebe and fast-track him into the first-team squad. There’s no doubt we’re lacking at the back but getting rid of Smalling wouldn’t be high on my to-do list, so I’m not surprised to see Mourinho wants to keep him.
