Ryan Giggs: This is what Jose Mourinho is doing wrong at Manchester United

by Leo Nieboer

Former Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs believes Jose Mourinho’s main problem at Manchester United is his side’s worrying lack of consistency.

Jose Mourinho’s men lie in sixth spot after only managing two wins in their last nine Premier League encounters.

Storming performances against the likes of Leicester and Swansea City have been overshadowed by a recurring inability to finish off lesser sides at home, with games against Stoke City, Burnley and Arsenal acting as potent examples.

Giggs, speaking on Sky Sports earlier today, believes Mourinho’s biggest problem is his inability to churn out big results on a regular basis.

“I’m looking at that team and I’m quite happy with it,” he said.

“The midfield three and the front three, I’m happy with. Now, we’ve got injuries at the back and it was a makeshift back four. But there wasn’t one United player who played badly and there wasn’t one Arsenal player who played well.

“So you can’t say that it was the team that Jose picked today. United are lacking consistency and Jose is constantly having the juggle the team.”

United fans have been limited to glimpses – no more than that – of what this side could achieve under the Special One this season. Penetrative, domineering and powerful, capable of not just beating but actively bulldozing opponents.

But then there’s the less likeable but more prevalent aspect of this side to contend with. United under Mourinho are blessed with talent, but also inundated by self-doubt – a kind of mental impasse that precludes them from really flourishing, from delivering rip-roaring performances on a constant basis.

Mourinho has already diagnosed this issue, and United fans will be desperate to see this problem solved sooner rather than later.
