Glenn Hoddle: Anthony Martial lacks confidence under Jose Mourinho

Former England manager Glenn Hoddle claims Anthony Martial lacks confidence under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

The Frenchman, following a groundbreaking debut campaign, has struggled to make an impact under Mourinho this season, mustering just two goals in 12 appearances.

France manager Didier Deschamps duly omitted Martial from the national side earlier this month, publicly calling for the 20-year-old to improve at club level.

Hoddle, speaking to Unibet, noted that the youngster has been short of confidence under Mourinho.

“This year I think his movement has been lacking and his desire to get on the ball,” Hoddle said.

“The lack of movement where he would take people away and check off so that then he can run at people and be destructive is not happening.

“Also, for me, when Manchester United build up down the right side, with his presence and physical size he’s not arriving in the penalty area in these goalscoring opportunities when the ball comes in.

“He’s hanging out too much and I think that’s a lack of confidence under Mourinho.”

Every player, at some point in their career, plunges into a spell of low confidence.

Needless to say, heavily hyped youngsters that play for big clubs are among those most likely to be afflicted. And Martial, following an excellent opening campaign, slots into that category. The second season is, strangely enough, often the hardest for some players. They set the tone during their debut campaign and then spend the next season trying to replicate past heroics, as opposed to adopting a more forward-looking approach.

A spell of low confidence is commonplace, and shouldn’t be met with too much concern. But Mourinho does find himself in a sticky situation with regards to Martial: does he continue to give him chances to impress, or does he take him out of the firing line completely?
