Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho feared that defender Phil Jones would not return to his best level.
He started in Man United’s previous two league games having missed their opening ten games through injury.
With Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling currently ruled out, Man United lost their first-choice central defensive pairing, however the Englishman has performed well even though he hadn’t featured in almost ten months.
Speaking about the situation, Mourinho claims he’s happy with Jones’ return after injury.
“His condition looks very good and his confidence is improving,” he said.
“Phil is playing really well, no mistakes in 90 minutes, and I’m really happy for him because so many people had him down as injury prone and believed it would be hard for him to get back to his best level.
“I have to confess that when he was injured again at the beginning of the season even I was feeling that fear but he has put in some great performances in the past weeks to give us the stability we need after losing Bailly and Smalling.”
Sir Alex Ferguson tipped him to become a top player at Old Trafford, but he’s been seriously held back by a host of injuries.
Since joining joining from Blackburn Rovers in the summer of 2011, Jones has only accumulated 144 appearances at Man United.
However, he’s impressed Mourinho with his latest return to the first-team and if he’s able to keep himself fit, will continue to pick up minutes under the Portuguese boss.
