Jamie Carragher: Jose Mourinho can’t win the title at Manchester United

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Jose Mourinho cannot win the title with Manchester United this season.

Man United slumped to their fourth successive draw at home on Sunday against West Ham United, leaving Mourinho’s men 11 points adrift of leaders Chelsea.

Carragher, speaking after United’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool back in October, expressed his doubts over their title credentials.

And following the 1-1 draw with West Ham, Carragher claimed that United cannot claim the title in May from this position.

“I don’t think it’s a possibility they can win the title,” he said.

“There are too many teams ahead of them and I don’t think they’re actually good enough. I don’t think they’ve had the toughest of starts. The four games at home they drew didn’t have too many big names in there.

“Jose Mourinho still has to talk about winning the title because that’s what he said at the start of the season. I think if you offered Jose Mourinho top four now he’d bite your hand off.

“He doesn’t want Thursday night football again. He’s going strong in the Europa League because he realises that’s an avenue to the Champions League.

“So now he’s playing all the players he wants to save in the Europa League which is affecting them in the league. But they’ve got a big fight on their hands for top four.”

Going into December, the most chaotic month of the season, United are 11 points adrift of top spot. And with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and even Arsenal hitting their stride, such a chasm feels insurmountable.

The hallmark of a title-winning team is not so much their aptitude for winning big games, but rather their ability to dismiss lesser teams with relative ease. Every aforementioned team did that last weekend, and United didn’t.

If Mourinho’s men are to have even the remotest sniff of the title this season, domination over lesser sides – as seen against Stole City, Burnley, Arsenal and West Ham – needs to start giving rise to positive results. And fast.
