Bastian Schweinsteiger in line to start against West Ham – report

Bastian Schweinsteiger is in line to make his first start for Manchester United this season against West Ham today, according to Sky Sports.

The German midfielder has been frozen out so far this season by Jose Mourinho but with Paul Pogba suspended and both Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini injury doubts, the suggestion is that Mourinho would have no qualms starting Schweinsteiger.

It would be the last step in a huge turnaround for Schweinsteiger because up until a few weeks he hadn’t even trained with the first-team. Since then, he’s trained and was on the bench against West Ham on Sunday – now he could complete that turnaround by starting in the EFL Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford tonight.

As far as most Man United fans are concerned, that would be an extremely positive bit of news because Schweinsteiger would be tasked to play in a deep lying defensive midfield role which is somewhere that would suit him right now, rather than a running midfield role he often played under Louis van Gaal.

In that position, he offers so much more than Fellaini and for me is a better alternative to Carrick than the Belgian, although questions have to be asked as to what is going on with Morgan Schneiderlin because Mourinho really doesn’t seem to like him.

However, staying on the positive side it looks like Schweinsteiger will no longer live in the shadows in Manchester and could well feature as part of Mourinho’s team against West Ham tonight. The return of the the Deutscher Fussball Meister is one step closer.
