Jose Mourinho eager to speed up new Manchester United contract for Juan Mata – report

Jose Mourinho is eager to speed up the process of handing Juan Mata a new contract this season, according to reports.

The Spaniard’s contract expires at the end of this season, and the club are yet to activate the one-year extension clause that exists on his current deal.

It was anticipated by many that Mata, offloaded by Mourinho in January 2014, would not last long at Manchester United upon the 53-year-old’s arrival.

However, to the surprise of many, the 28-year-old has cemented himself in Mourinho’s starting XI, and as a result the Portuguese, according to the Sun‘s Daniel Cutts, has expressed a desire to accelerate talks for a new deal.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the Mourinho era so far has been the astonishing rise of Mata – a man many consigned to a July move to Everton after it was announced that the Special One would take charge at Old Trafford.

The Spaniard, however, has managed to assert himself on this Man United side this season, producing a string of characteristically composed, smart and tidy displays going forward, easily eclipsing the level he reached under Louis van Gaal last season.

United fans will hope that Mata remains injury free and continues his impressive run of form throughout the busy Christmas period.
