Jose Mourinho insists Marouane Fellaini is Paul Pogba’s natural replacement at Manchester United.

The pair were both suspended for Man United’s EFL quarter-final with West Ham on Wednesday night after they collected their fifth domestic bookings of the campaign in Sunday’s Premier League draw.

The Portuguese boss had started the duo for three successive games at the start of the campaign, but soon realised Ander Herrera was able to get the most out of Pogba alongside Michael Carrick.

Speaking about the situation, Mourinho revealed the Belgian would have been in Man United’s midfield if he was available.

“Unfortunately tonight we are without Paul Pogba and his natural replacement, Marouane Fellaini,” he said. “But I have the players who can do the job despite those problems.

“We dominated our opponents without winning on Sunday, so tonight it is a case of doing the same again but making sure that the result matches the performance.

“In all of this season’s cup matches at home – three in the Europa League and one in the EFL Cup against Manchester City – we have had we haven’t had in the Premier League: we have scored goals, we haven’t had key decisions go against us and we have managed to win all four matches

“We can get back to that level tonight: a good performance with good attacking play and goals.”

It was a big blow for United to have Pogba out, but the team seriously stepped up in his absence and put in a spectacular showing against West Ham.

Hopes are the squad can carry their momentum into the clash against Everton in the Premier League on December 4.
