Jose Mourinho pleased to take Manchester United back to their traditions

Jose Mourinho has stressed the importance of implementing the club’s traditional values at Old Trafford this season.

Former manager Louis van Gaal was dismissed in May after failing to introduce a style of football that satisfied fans, the players themselves and indeed the board of directors.

But Mourinho, despite struggling to consistently deliver results, has introduced a greater level of attacking potency since arriving in June.

The 53-year-old, speaking after Manchester United’s 4-1 win over West Ham United on Wednesday night, once again stressed the importance of upholding the club’s culture of attacking football.

“One of the things I proposed to myself was to come to such a club like Manchester United who play the kind of football that people want, because it’s Manchester United’s tradition, so I’m really happy with that,” he said.

“We have very good players in these [attacking] positions, so when the team produces from behind and builds up well, these players are very creative. But, of course we need to score goals.”

Man United are miles off the pace in the Premier League this season, and critics can fairly question this side’s title credentials as we enter the busy Christmas period. What they can’t question, however, is that – even after just three and a half months – Mourinho’s United have created more excitement than what van Gaal managed in an entire season.

United have record 91 shots in their last four Premier League home games; I don’t think van Gaal’s side managed that many in an entire season. They have scored three or more goals on seven occasions so far (three more than United at this point last season). Another stark contrast: in 103 games under van Gaal, United scored four or more goals on four occasions; under Mourinho, however, United have managed to replicate such a feat after just 23 games.

The results may not be there just yet, but make no mistake: United under Mourinho will be an exciting outfit.
