Millen Baars confirms Manchester United move

Manchester United have snapped up another Dutch youngster in the form of Millen Baars from Ajax.

Baars, 16, will become the latest Dutchman to move to Man United in recent years following the arrivals of Tahith Chong from Feyenoord and Timothy Fosu-Mensah – both of whom have gone on to have brilliant starts to life in Manchester.

While there has been no official announcement from Man United, Baars updated his official Instagram profile picture and bio to confirm the move and he will be eligible to play for United’s high flying U18s in January.

Speaking to Noordhollands Dagblad, Millen’s father explained why he left Ajax despite being named captain of their youth team in order to pursue his move to United.

He said: “We have had talks with Ajax that were between Millen and the club. But it was certainly nothing shocking, he was even appointed captain this season of the B1.

“Ajax is a great club with a very good youth, but they can unfortunately not cope so very well. You saw in the past with other youth players who now play at other clubs. But Millen was ready for a different challenge.

“He played nine seasons in Amsterdam and he has always had the dream to play football in England.

“There was interest from Italy, Portugal and England, but when he was at Chelsea and United to look, he knew he wanted to play in Manchester. He did not even see Arsenal, his choice was made.”

United signed Fosu-Mensah as a 16-year-old from Ajax’s youth academy and after a rapid progression over 18 months he became part of the first-team squad. Baars will be hoping for the same career trajectory.

Nicky Butt has overseen a swath of new signings to revamp our academy system and right now Kieran McKenna has United’s U18s playing the most exciting football in the club, so the addition of Baars can only go to strengthen McKenna’s options at that level.
