Jose Fonte has confirmed he has not been offered a new contract by Southampton amid rumours surrounding a potential move to Manchester United.
It was reported over the summer that Jose Mourinho had expressed an interest in the 32-year-old, who made it clear that he was focused on his endeavours at Saint Mary’s.
Further reports suggested that talks between Fonte’s representatives and Southampton over a new contract had broken down earlier this week. The Portuguese’s current contract expires at the end of the 2017/18 season.
Fonte, via social media earlier today, confirmed that instead of rejecting a new contract, the club never offered him one in the first place.
Such a development suggests that Southampton, hitherto very robust when it came to holding on to Fonte, are perhaps willing to offload the defender if they receive a good deal.
He is, after all, now 32, and it would seem that his best years are largely behind him, with perhaps one or two years at the top left.
Now United fans must play a waiting game: does Fonte, upon seeing that Southampton harbour no interest in renewing his contract, make a move elsewhere next month, or will he decide to fully honour his contract before retiring?
