Romelu Lukaku has offered some insight into the inner thoughts of Paul Pogba on his return to Manchester United and insisted the Frenchman had fulfilled his dream by coming back to Old Trafford.
Pogba’s acrimonious departure after contract disputes preceded a meteoric rise to stardom at Juventus which ultimately earned him a move back to the club he left in a world record transfer.
There are lots who feel his move back to Man United was simply motivated by money but having been with him when he signed the contract, Lukaku suggests it was something different altogether that drove him.
Speaking to Sport Magazine, Lukaku said: “There were maybe ten people surrounding him with briefcases and contracts inside.
“When everything was signed, and I’ve known Paul for many years, I’ve never seen him with that look on his face. I’d never seen him so happy.
“This return to United, it had nothing to do with money. It was a relief, a real happiness for him. We only spoke once about football during our holidays this summer, when we were at a pool in LA, and he was telling me about his dream to return to United.
“That’s when I understood what it meant.”
How dare you suggest it wasn’t all about money Romelu? That won’t sell the papers, that’s not the narrative anybody wants to hear about Pogba. For United fans, we can see that spark in his eye – although, we’re not in complete denial that the stuffed coffers helped along the way.
Pogba has come back home to the club that plucked him from Le Havre and gave him the building blocks which he used to craft himself into a wonderful footballer and now he’s back we’re hoping to reap the rewards.
From an outside perspective looking in, Pogba’s lack of goals and assists indicate he is performing badly but United fans will tell a different story because he’s becoming more and more influential, it’s just a lack of good finishing standing in between him and a score of assists.
I can’t wait to see how good Pogba is going to be for United when he hits top gear and when he does there’ll be plenty of people swooning over him just like they were at Juventus. Bring it on.
