Jose Mourinho: Ander Herrera is having a phenomenal season

Jose Mourinho has praised Ander Herrera and labelled his form this season as phenomenal for Manchester United.

Herrera has made himself indispensable playing in a new defensive midfield role under Mourinho having had to wait some time for his opportunity at the club since joining from Athletic Bilbao.

With some wonderful performances worthy of wearing the captain’s armband, Herrera has certainly become a bit of a cult hero in a short time this year and that form is clearly making him just as important to Mourinho as he is to fans.

“I think the most important thing for a player is the manager and the fans,” Mourinho said this week after our 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

“Ander has [the backing of] both the manager and the fans. So I don’t think he’s worried about others bringing him to the limelight; he knows that he is having a phenomenal season for us.

“That is why he plays, that is why he had his international debut with the Spanish national team. And yes, I think our midfield was very good on Sunday, all of them, so I’m happy for them.”

I’ve made my feelings very clear about Ander this year because I think he’s a captain in the making. It was specifically the Liverpool away game where he played like his life was on the line, took it by the scruff of the neck and played with the same sort of passion the likes of Roy Keane and Bryan Robson did in their pomp. It’s been a while since we’ve had someone like that in the middle of the park.

Herrera has always been a top drawer player but it’s safe to say Mourinho is getting the most out of him and that debut for Spain goes to show his form is being recognised outside of Manchester which will mean a lot to Ander.

Three years have passed since Fergie retired but United are now on the upward curve and with Herrera bossing our midfield alongside Paul Pogba and Michael Carrick, I think we’ve got the quality in this team to mount a real push for the top three spots in the Premier League this season.
