Marouane Fellaini set to stay at Manchester United – report

Marouane Fellaini will remain at Manchester United this season despite receiving interest from other clubs ahead of the January transfer window, according to reports.

Both West Ham United and AC Milan have reportedly expressed an interest in the Belgian, who hasn’t made a Premier League start since early November.

Fellaini was subject to widespread derision from supporters after giving away a late penalty against Everton minutes after coming on, with many calling for the Belgian to pack his bags and leave.

However Mourinho, according to ESPN’s Mark Ogden, is determined to not lose Fellaini over the January transfer window.

Perhaps the impending departure of Morgan Schneiderlin, who looks set for a move to Everton, has led to Mourinho – who has always expressed his support for the heavily-lambasted midfielder – batting away any potential buyers. Continued precariousness surrounding Bastian Schweinsteiger‘s future would have also cajoled the Special One into keeping the Belgian close.

That said, with the now-established midfield trio of Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba now in full flow at United, chances will be hard to come by for a player still actively resented by a large section of supporters.

But it should be noted that Fellaini has an ability to impose himself when nobody expects anything. His thunderous equaliser against West Bromwich Albion back in 2014, for example. And United fans will hope that the Belgian, buoyed by the support of Mourinho, can replicate similar unexpected heroics in the coming months.
