Benfica boss Rui Vitoria speaks out about Victor Lindelof’s failed Manchester United move

Benfica boss Rui Vitoria claims Victor Lindelof was not dropped from the squad because he is being sold in a deal to Manchester United.

The centre-back returned to Portugal this week after the Christmas break in Sweden but wasn’t included in the squad that beat Pacos de Ferreira on Thursday.

Man United have allegedly cooled their interest in the 22-year-old as Jose Mourinho has been satisfied with the form of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo.

Speaking about Lindelof’s situation at the club, Vitoria insists he will be back in training on Friday.

“He will be training with us (on Friday),” he said. “He sat out of the 18 as did others. Leaving out Lindelof was my choice. We have five quality centre-backs.

“The president knows what to do with the fortunes of the club. There is no player who is not committed to Benfica.”

There are concers at Old Trafford that Benfica are trying to drive the price up for his services even though he hasn’t even made 50 senior appearances.

Although reports in Portugal claim a £38m deal is still on, it seems nothing has moved forward yet as United have still not made a formal bid for Lindelof.
