Ander Herrera has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League this season with a series of sensational performances alongside Paul Pogba.
The Spaniard has made 22 appearances under Jose Mourinho, featuring primarily as box-to-box midfielder, with Michael Carrick sitting deeper and Pogba enjoying a more advanced role.
Jose Mourinho hasn’t seen his side lose with the midfield combination of Pogba, Carrick and Herrera this season.
It has been revealed that Herrera, excelling in his new role, has made more interceptions (47) than any other Premier League midfielder this season (even more than the esteemed N’Golo Kante).
For those that have watched the midfielder under Mourinho, this statistic should come as no surprise. Herrera, who struggled to cope with Louis van Gaal‘s restrictive approach, has been galvanised with a new sense of purpose in recent months, clearly flourishing alongside Carrick and Pogba.
His function is clear: to provide energy and tenacity in midfield whilst Carrick dictates the game’s pace, leaving Pogba with the license to roam forward at will. So far, such a system has worked perfectly, with Herrera rampaging his way through various midfield battles. United fans will just hope to see such brilliance continue in the coming weeks.
