Jesse Lingard has called on his Manchester United teammates to continue their impressive winning run going into the new year.
Jose Mourinho’s men, following a rocky start to their Premier League campaign, have mounted a resurgence in recent weeks, claiming five wins on the bounce.
They have a chance to round off a mixed 2016 in style at home to Middlesbrough on New Year’s eve.
And Lingard, speaking ahead of the game with Aitor Karanka’s side, emphasised the importance of Man United continuing their winning run next month.
“We’ve found our match rhythm now, and a lot of players are playing their part and helping us win games,” he said.
“We need to keep that going. If we can, it will put us in a good place in January.”
Mourinho’s men have cultivated some much-needed momentum in recent weeks, displaying a capacity for turning promising displays into convincing results.
Sir Alex Ferguson used to say that the Premier League season only properly begins in January, and Mourinho will be keen on adopting a similar mantra. David Moyes, funnily enough, enjoyed a similar winning run during the Christmas period but crucially failed to kick on in January, leading to his side’s descent into mediocrity.
But with a settled midfield, a powerful defence and an in-form Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Mourinho and his men will be bursting with confidence heading into the new year.
