Jose Mourinho: Anthony Martial has to listen to me and not his agent

Jose Mourinho insisted that Anthony Martial has to listen to him and not his agent following Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Middlesbrough.

It was reported earlier this week that Martial’s agent, Philippe Lamboley, was keen on orchestrating a loan deal with Sevilla for the youngster.

The club, in response to Lamboley’s comments, made it clear that the Frenchman would not be going anywhere in January.

And Mourinho, speaking after the win over Aitor Karanka’s side, was adamant that Martial – who netted Man United’s equaliser – would remain at Old Trafford this season.

Murmurs surrounding a potential loan move for Martial have been predicated by the youngster’s recent lapse in form. Indeed, this is what agents do: they analyse how their client is performing and look elsewhere if they appear to be struggling.

With this in mind, Martial’s display against Middlesbrough was perhaps illustrative of a renewed determination to assert himself under Mourinho. Often a distant figure this season, the 21-year-old took to the field with an air of cold menace, clearly intent on asserting himself from the first minute.

The result was devastating. Callum Chambers simply couldn’t cope with Martial’s raw speed and aggression on the left hand side, and United fans will hope to see the Frenchman replicate such heroics in the coming weeks.
