Jose Mourinho has claimed that Sir Alex Ferguson, who turned 75 today, deserved to see his former side claim a late win against Middlesbrough in the Premier League.
The visitors, despite spending the entire afternoon on the back foot, went ahead through Grant Leadbitter after 67 minutes.
But Mourinho’s men, with Sir Alex watching from the stands, rallied late on with goals from Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba.
Speaking after the game, the 53-year-old insisted that Sir Alex deserved to witness a display reminiscent of the golden days at Old Trafford.

Supporters have been deprived of storming late displays in recent years. david Moyes’ Manchester United side lacked any form of resolve going forward, bereft of any meaningful purpose or confidence. How many times did we have to sit there and watch as United, in need of a late goal, anxiously moved the ball across the back four with minutes left?
Things weren’t too different under Louis van Gaal, with the Dutchman’s restrictive system precluding the side from entering throw-the-kitchen-sink mode.
Under Mourinho, however, things are different: this is a side capable of launching powerful attacking displays, evidently fearless in their approach and full of belief – a true sign of confidence starting to bloom under the 53-year-old.
