The reason why Anthony Martial is unhappy at Manchester United

Anthony Martial has grown unhappy at Manchester United in recent months due to his lack of playing time under Jose Mourinho, according to L’Equipe.

The Frenchman enjoyed a sensational breakthrough campaign under Louis van Gaal last season, netting 17 goals and receiving the 2015 Golden Boy award.

Life has proven to be harder under Jose Mourinho, however, with the youngster only managing 12 Premier League appearances so far this season.

L’Equipe wrote earlier this week: “Martial wants to receive more playing time and there is a feeling that the enormous fee that United paid for him is not being reflected in his current importance to Mourinho’s side.”

Holding down a regular place in a Mourinho side blossoming with attacking talent will always be challenging. And it is perhaps no surprise that, following such a spellbinding first year at the club, Martial would encounter a slight sip during his second season.

This is, after all, the reality of playing at the highest level. Mourinho has employed a system that demands wingers to play in a notably different way to that of van Gaal, placing emphasis on contributing to build-up play and dropping back to help out defensively. Indeed, Samuel Eto’o encountered a similar predicament when Mourinho arrived at Inter Milan, but the Cameroonian quickly adapted and thrived.

Man United fans will be desperate to see Martial do the same at Old Trafford in the coming months.
