Lyon manager Bruno Genesio speaks out about interest in Man United winger Memphis Depay

Lyon manager Bruno Genesio has confirmed his interest in Memphis Depay amid rumours linking the 22-year-old with a move to the French side this month.

It was reported earlier this week that Lyon, also linked with Adnan Januzaj, had begun talks with Manchester United over a potential deal to sign the Dutchman.

Jose Mourinho, speaking ahead of Man United’s FA Cup contest with Reading, made it clear that he would let Memphis and Morgan Schneiderlinwho has since moved to Evertonleave if the club received a suitable offer.

And Genesio, who had a £13m bid for the Dutchman rejected this week, made it clear that Memphis remains a priority during the transfer window.

“Memphis is a priority,” he said.

“He is complete, powerful and has great potential. Contrary to what I have read, I am a fan of Memphis.”

“Things are progressing,” he confirmed when asked about the nature of the discussions between Lyon and United. “We keep working. It takes time, discussions, because recruiting a player now is not easy.”

Nobody will disagree with the notion that Memphis, for all his natural brilliance, has hit a wall at Old Trafford. No Premier League starts this season, no goals, no assists, with his one start of the season – against Northampton Town in September – leading to a 55th minute substitution.

In a United shirt Memphis is something of a ghostly figure, listlessly trawling across the pitch for ten uneventful minutes, never looking likely to impose any sort of impact. A fresh start in a totally different environment is perhaps the only way to rectify his ailing career, and Lyon would be a good club for exactly that.
