Manchester United vs Liverpool: Three players who must start

by Leo Nieboer

Jose Mourinho will know that his side’s hopes of mounting a challenge to Chelsea this season strongly hinges on whether they can beat Liverpool on Sunday.

A win would take Manchester United to within two points of Jurgen Klopp’s currently second placed side, whilst anything less would condemn them to further anonymity in sixth spot.

With that in mind, here are three players Mourinho must start on Sunday.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Mourinho, following Man United’s win over Hull City in midweek, confirmed that the Swede – after a two game absence – would feature against Liverpool. And Zlatan, buoyed by a record of ten goals in as many games and fresh from receiving the Premier League Player of the Month award, will be looking to inflict maximal damage on Sunday.

Antonio Valencia

The Ecuadorian has been United’s most unsung hero so far this season, producing a seemingly endless stream of powerful, composed and disciplined performances at right back all season. He injects both width and energy going forward and monumental solidity in defence, and he’ll be determined to take advantage of James Milner featuring at left back.

Michael Carrick

In a game that Mourinho’s men simply have to win, including Carrick feels like a no brainer: 15 starts, 13 wins, no defeats and 39 goals scored. United’s record with the 35-year-old in the starting XI speaks for itself. He will look to take an early hold of proceedings, taking the sting out of Liverpool’s high pressing by maintaining a steady flow in midfield and in turn creating a strong platform from which to dominate.
