Lyon midfielder Jonathan Ferri has welcomed the prospect of playing alongside Memphis Depay amid rumours of a potential move to the French side for the 22-year-old.
It was reported last week that Manchester United had rejected a £13m bid from Lyon for the Dutchman’s services, with Jose Mourinho later claiming that the club would only entertain an improved offer.
Lyon manager Bruno Genesio, when asked about the rumours, confirmed that talks between the two clubs over the winger – who hasn’t made a Premier League start this season – were ongoing.
And Ferri, speaking in the wake of Lyon’s 2-3 defeat to Caen, admitted that a player of Memphis’ calibre would indeed be welcome at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
“Lyon are an ambitious club and it’s great to know that we can make investments to sign world-class players,” he said.
“If he [Depay] arrives, we’ll welcome him like any other newcomer. Signing new players who can give the team something more it’s always positive.”
Lyon would be something of an ideal fit for Memphis: a strong, dynamic side, currently eleven points adrift of leaders Monaco and second-placed Nice, clearly intent on adding some attacking zeal ahead of latter stages of the season. Supporters would welcome the Dutchman with open arms.
Moving to a new country and playing in a totally different environment feels like the best way for Memphis – who has clearly gone stale at Old Trafford – to rectify his currently ailing career.
