Manchester United vs Stoke City: Potential XI with Mkhitaryan, Pogba and Ibrahimovic

by Leo Nieboer

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s late equaliser during Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool ensured that, despite losing their unbeaten streak, Jose Mourinho’s men retained their momentum heading into the business end of the season.

They are now unbeaten in 16 games and sit just five points off second spot, and would briefly leapfrog Manchester City – who host Tottenham Hotspur later that day – into fifth spot.

Man United fans will agree that the visit to the Stoke City – a place where United haven’t won during the post Fergie era – must result in a win.

With that in mind, here is a potential XI for the game against Mark Hughes’ side which sees Mourinho making zero changes from the team which played Liverpool. Is this his best team?

Paul Pogba attracted widespread criticism from all sectors of the football world following his display against Jurgen Klopp’s side. The Frenchman, usually a composed, monstrously athletic figure, appeared to be weighed down by a mixture of Liverpool’s pressing and the enormity of the occasion. Mourinho – and indeed all United fans – will hope to see Pogba, a crucial element of this current side, return to his best on Saturday.

Anthony Martial provided United’s only real attacking impetus during the first half against Liverpool, charging down the touchline with reckless abandon, and one suspects that Mourinho will want to give the youngster another chance to continue his recovery at the Britannia Stadium.
