Ray Wilkins: Jose Mourinho must offload Memphis Depay immediately

by Leo Nieboer

Former Manchester United midfielder Ray Wilkins believes that Jose Mourinho must immediately get rid of Memphis Depay during the January transfer window.

The Dutchman, who endured a dramatically substandard debut campaign last season, has only made one start under Mourinho – against Northampton Town in the League Cup back in September.

Lyon manager Bruno Génésio confirmed last week that talks with Man United over a potential move for the Dutchman were ongoing.

And Wilkins, speaking on Sky Sports, claimed that Memphis has done nothing to justify his place in the United first team.

Memphis Depay has done nothing,” he said.

“They need to offload him. They’ve got better young men in Martial and Rashford than Memphis Depay.”

The stage appeared to be set for Memphis: he was young, fresh and confident after firing PSV Eindhoven to a historic Eredivisie title, coming into a side that was only going to improve after a promising opening campaign under Louis van Gaal.

Fast forward 18 months and the picture is far gloomier. Memphis has fallen way down the pecking order, miles behind the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Juan Mata Jesse Lingard and Ashley Young, and it feels as if a fresh start at another club would be the best way to rectify his faltering career.
