Fans share their thoughts on Manchester United’s next No.7

by Leo Nieboer

Manchester United supporters have given their thoughts on who should be their side’s next No.7 following Memphis Depay‘s departure to Lyon.

The Dutchman, following 18 months of constantly failing to impress at Old Trafford, completed his move to Lyon for a fee of £16m that could rise to £22m with add ons earlier this week.

Supporters, when asked about who could take Memphis’ No.7 shirt at Man United, were quick to suggest a number of names, with many opting for Antoine Griezmann, who reportedly agreed personal terms and a weekly wage with the club this week.

The No.7 shirt at United has been something of a poisoned chalice ever since Cristiano Ronaldo – arguably the greatest ever player to wear the shirt – departed for Real Madrid in 2009. Michael Owen took possession of the revered title but never truly did the number justice; ditto Antonio Valencia; and Memphis, despite initial enthusiasm, has been the worst one yet.

But it does feel as if the sudden confluence of Memphis’ departure and Griezmann’s imminent arrival lends itself nicely to the latter taking on the burden once he arrives. The Frenchman, after all, has indeed admitted that his main childhood footballing icon was David Beckham, a truly iconic No.7, and it would be fitting to see Griezmann take on the Englishman’s legacy.
