David de Gea: Manchester United are moving in the right direction

by Leo Nieboer

David de Gea has insisted that Manchester United are moving in the right direction under Jose Mourinho this season.

The 53-year-old encountered a rocky start to life at Old Trafford, managing just two Premier League wins between September and early December.

However Man United, despite remaining in sixth spot, have discovered their groove under the Portuguese and can extend their unbeaten run to 17 games against Stoke City on Saturday.

And De Gea, speaking to Sky Sports, made it clear that United were moving in the right direction under the Special One’s tutelage.

“We are in the four competitions and we need to fight for everything,” he said.

“We are Manchester United. We are close to the (EFL Cup) final at Wembley and we need to start (preparing for that) on Saturday against Stoke.

“We want to keep winning. We are in a good run and we need to stay at the same level, try to win many games and then we can see where we finish in the league.”

A brief glance at the Premier League table would tempt one into thinking that, contrary to the general mood, United have failed to progress since the days of Louis van Gaal.

But this is a remarkably specious view to take: United, after all, are just five points behind second-placed Tottenham Hotspur, 90 minutes away from a League Cup final, and still in the Europa League and FA Cup. Combine that with palpable improvement in both the general mood and style of play at Old Trafford and it becomes clear that United are indeed progressing under Mourinho.
