Jose Mourinho confirms why Anthony Martial was absent against Stoke City

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Anthony Martial was indeed available for Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Stoke City but simply wasn’t selected for the match-day squad.

Man United fell behind in the 19th minute through a Juan Mata own goal but salvaged a point in injury time through a sensational free-kick from Wayne Rooney.

Martial’s agent, speaking before the game, noted that the Frenchman was angry after being omitted from the match-day squad.

And Mourinho, when asked about the reason behind the youngster’s absence, confirmed that he wasn’t injured before bluntly noting: “Martial was not selected.”

Martial’s apparent frustration at Mourinho, this time complimented by the 53-year-old’s icy tone when talking about the winger, has fuelled further speculation surrounding the Frenchman’s predicament at Old Trafford.

It was reported earlier this month, for instance, that Martial was not happy with the amount of game time received under Mourinho this season – an outburst accompanied by rumours of a loan move to Sevilla during the January transfer window.
