Memphis Depay insists he had to Manchester United in the January transfer window to get his career back on track.

The Dutchman arrived at Old Trafford from PSV in 2015 with high expectations, however he failed to establish himself as a first-team player during his first 18 months at the club.

As a result, he was allowed to leave the club for a fee that could allegedly rise to €25million, as he joined Lyon in a search to re-find his best form.

Speaking about his situation, Memphis claimed he held no bad feelings towards Jose Mourinho.

“My arrival here is not about getting revenge for what happened in Manchester,” he said.

“I want to show what I’m capable of. At United I trained and developed alongside some great players.

“I learned a lot from them. I want to score goals and enjoy playing football in this Parc OL that is truly magnificent.

“I’m excited at the idea of playing in this beautiful stadium. It’s a welcome challenge for me. I’ll play where the coach wants me to. My best position is on the left, but I can play in several positions.”

There were often reports surrounding Memphis suggesting he had the wrong attitude at Man United, but Mourinho claimed he had no issues with the player’s application and attitude, it was just didn’t work out.

It’s unfortunate because Memphis showcased plenty of potential during his time at the club, especially in Europe, but he just wasn’t able to perform in the Premier League when he was given the opportunities to do so.
