Michael Carrick: Wayne Rooney deserves much more credit at Manchester United

Michael Carrick insists Wayne Rooney deserves much more credit after he after he overtook Sir Bobby Charlton as leading goal scorer for club and country.

The Englishman came off the bench and beat the record in brilliant style, finding the back of the net in the 94th minute with a well-taken free-kick against Stoke City.

He has been heavily criticised over his performances, especially when he lost his starting role for club and country, but has proven he still has it in his locker when United relied upon him one more time.

Speaking about his teammate, Carrick revealed his admiration for Rooney’s quality.

“It’s a sensation achievement for club and country, he full deserves it,” he said.

“To play at the level that he has for so long for England too, you can’t underestimate how tough it is to play so many games in the spotlight.

“He’s answered back and shut people up when he’s been questioned. It’s not very easy to do. He’s changed over the years of how he plays but that’s a natural progression.”

It’s hard for Rooney to maintain his top form as he’s been playing football at the highest level for club and country since he burst onto the scene as a youngster.

250 goals for Man United is a massive milestone, especially in modern football and it’s hard to think about anyone beating that record at Old Trafford.
