Craig Burley believes Paul Pogba must do more for Manchester United when Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not performing.
Man United managed to extended their unbeaten run to 17 games across all competitions on Saturday afternoon following their 1-1 draw away to Stoke City, with Wayne Rooney coming off the bench to become the club’s all-time record goalscorer with a brilliant 94th minute free-kick.
However, Pogba was quiet once again following one of his worst performances in a Man United shirt last weekend against Liverpool.
Speaking about the Frenchman, Burley insisted he has to provide when his team aren’t.
“I don’t want to pick on Paul Pogba. I say that but I don’t care, he’s out there to be shot down,” he said.
“He’s got to do more. When Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] is having a quiet day or when he doesn’t feel great because he’s delivered big time for a guy in his mid-30s up front on his own for United.
“He has delivered the goals and the performances. But when he’s having those days when he doesn’t score a goal or two, someone else has to step up. We mention Rooney coming off the bench.
“But I’m looking at the most expensive player in history who had a poor game last week against Liverpool and again today when in possession and in that final third there were too many flicks and tricks and not enough good decisions. Those are the disappointing signs.”
Pogba has regularly come under criticism after he became the world’s most expensive player, however he’s performed well and doesn’t deserve most of the stick.
He may have only scored four goals in his 21 games, but he’s not in the side just to score goals, he orchestrates the play in the midfield and creates plenty of chances.
