Man United fans underwhelmed by Matteo Darmian’s performance against Hull City

Manchester United fans were left unimpressed with Matteo Darmian‘s performance during their side’s second-leg 2-1 defeat to Hull City in the League Cup semi-final.

The Italian, handed a rare chance to feature on the right hand side of defence, offered little inspiration at the back and failed to impose himself going forward all evening.

Man United fans were quick to voice their disapproval of Darmian’s lukewarm performance.

Supporters will still faintly remember those few weeks back in August 2015 where Darmian, brought to Old Trafford following an excellent season in Italy, looked as if he would make the right back slot his own.

But here he was, almost 18 months later, labouring through yet another uninspiring 90 minutes at full-back. Recent times have witnessed a small resurgence from the Italian, who did produce a few solid performances on the left hand side during Luke Shaw‘s prolonged absence.

Against Hull, however, even that usual rudimentary solidity was missing, replaced instead with a shaky, unreliable figure at right back, doing just enough to thwart what little Hull did have to offer whilst failing to convince United supporters – and Jose Mourinho as well – that he should be anything other than a second choice option at Old Trafford this season.
