Bastian Schweinsteiger produces complete performance against Wigan Athletic

Bastian Schweinsteiger treated supporters to a commanding display during Manchester United’s 4-0 win over Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup fourth round.

The German, making his first start in over a year, dictated proceedings at the base of midfield all game and crowned an excellent afternoon with a superb assist for Man United’s opener before adding their fourth after 81 minutes.

A quick look at Schweinsteiger’s stats from the game tells you everything about the dominating nature of his performance.

You could be forgiven for forgetting the influence that Schweinsteiger – the man with 18 major honours to his name, as well as a World Cup winner’s medal – can bring to the heart of midfield. His last start, after all, dates back to United’s 1-0 win over Sheffield United back in January 2016 – possibly the most underwhelming victory ever recorded in the history of association football.

But the game against Warren Joyce’s side served as a chance for the German – who, prior to the encounter with Wigan, only had 16 minutes of action under his belt this season – to remind the watching world of what he had to offer, and he did it in style: composed on the ball, always aware of what surrounded him, calmly orchestrating the tempo of the game with a constant stream of precise, attack-minded passes.

It was something of a masterclass, and supporters will hope to see more of the same as the season goes on.
