Real Madrid reignite their interest in Manchester United’s David de Gea – report

Real Madrid have reignited their interest in David de Gea ahead of the summer transfer window, according to reports from Spain.

The Spanish side came desperately close to securing De Gea’s signature back in August 2015, only for the deal to eventually fall through.

It was later reported that, following the failed deal, Madrid had abandoned all interest in signing the 26-year-old, who signed a new contract with Man United soon after the deal had fallen through.

However, according to Calcio Mercato, Zinedine Zidane has reaffirmed the club’s interest in the Spaniard ahead of a potential summer move.

Madrid, as a club, function in a completely unique way. They have always been grounded in a game of politics ever since the days of Franco, and the De Gea fiasco falls in line with that way of thinking. I mean, think about it: for a club desperate to preserve their image of international prestige, failing to secure a deal for the Spaniard, alongside losing out on Paul Pogba to a side not even in the Champions League, is something they will want to address.

Zinedine Zidane will know that, as Madrid manager, he needs to make big, bold statements, and landing De Gea after literally years of conjecture would be exactly that.
