Patrice Evra has claimed his move to Manchester United may have been blocked by someone other than Jose Mourinho.
He was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford and a comeback could have been on the cards during the January transfer window before the Frenchman switched from Juventus to Marseille.
He enjoyed a remarkable career at Man united, enjoying eight trophy-laden seasons and remains massively popular with fans at the club.
Speaking about a potential deal, Evra insists a deal was very close to completion.
“I was very close to a return to Manchester United,” he said.
“I also spoke with Mourinho but there was a person, whose name I will not say, who probably did not like the idea of my return.
“Even the fans were enthusiastic and would have been delighted, but because I realised that they [United] would not do anything I then asked my agent to look for other teams.
“Marseille immediately won me over with their project and immediately created a great feeling.
“We only spent one day to close the deal. They really treated me like a God, making it clear they had a great need for me.”
It would have been incredible to have him back at United as he still remains a massively inspirational character to the likes of Paul Pogba and would have easily taken charge of Mourinho’s makeshift defence.
All the best to him and hopes are he continue to put in impressive displays during his time at Marseille under manager Rudi Garcia.
