Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre has urged Anthony Martial not to follow after Paul Pogba and leave Old Trafford.
The 21-year-old has endured a difficult start to life under Jose Mourinho, and has featured in just one of Man United’s last five games as he as struggled to re-find the form that saw him score 17 goals during his debut campaign.
He rubbished reports on Monday morning suggesting he was looking for an Old Trafford exit after being left on the sidelines by the Portuguese boss.
Silvestre urged fellow Frenchman Martial to be patient for his place in the side as he hopes to win over Mourinho.
“He had a difficult summer with France. He had a game where he didn’t perform and he was out of the team. And you have to remember the episode of giving his number for Ibrahimovic to take. He was not happy about that,” he said.
“We always say when you have a good first season it’s hard and we have to put that on the fact he’s still young and still learning.
“I hope he keeps patient and won’t do a Pogba and head to Juventus.
“He had been their top scorer last season but this year he’s a different player.”
He was our best attacking player last season but has struggled for form this campaign and when fans thought he had done enough to earn his place back in the side, Mourinho insisted he must do better.
It’s clear Mourinho is trying to push him to achieve his best as Louis van Gaal claimed Martial’s purchase would benefit his successor more.
Hopes are he works hard and comes out the other end stronger as supporters saw with Henrikh Mkhitaryan earlier in the season.
