De Gea was on the verge of joining Real Madrid in the summer of 2015 but a broken fax machine meant stopped the move from being completed, much to the delight of every single Man United fan.
Despite the fact De Gea has gone on to sign a new contract with United, the Real Madrid links are already circling around his head but Mata has tried to downplay the importance of them.
“David is a veteran here already, been here many years,” Mata said.
“Everyone recognises his contribution to the team. More rumours have come out? If we are just in February, imagine until June, July, August … I did not know that it had come out again.
“He had a hectic summer before. I’ve not spoken to him about this at all. He is relaxed here, and with too much to think about for the rest of the season, without thinking about the summer.”
De Gea hugging Mata when he stepped off the helicopter was the beginning of their bromance at United and Ander Herrera‘s arrival to make it the three Spanish musketeers only took it to another level. Having those two players join certainly helped De Gea to settle down even more at United and he is now undoubtedly one of the world’s best goalkeepers.
Real Madrid will come sniffing around him this summer after their transfer ban was rescinded but with De Gea tied down to a new contract and former Madrid boss Jose Mourinho in charge, they are going to find it very difficult to prise one of our best players away from the club no matter how much money they throw at us.
