Wayne Rooney: Jose Mourinho is the right manager for Man United

by Leo Nieboer

Wayne Rooney has insisted Jose Mourinho is the right manager for Manchester United, pointing towards his excellent record at other clubs as evidence.

The 54-year-old encountered a difficult start to life at Old Trafford, managing just two Premier League wins from September to early December.

However, a powerful resurgence over the Christmas period has taken Man United from being nine points off fourth spot to just two.

And Rooney, speaking earlier this week, made it clear that the Portuguese was made for this job.

“He’s obviously a top manager — I think his record at all the clubs he’s been at shows that,” he told GQ.

“I think he knows what he wants from the players, and the players know what the manager wants from them.

“He’s strong in that sense but as long as you’re doing what he wants, then I’m sure you’ll be fine.

“I think you can see he has got a winning mentality — not that we didn’t have that already, but he’s certainly reminded us of that.”

The Mourinho era has been a strange period in Rooney’s career. The Portuguese’s first season at Old Trafford signalled the moment the striker, after 14 seasons, finally drifted away from a regular place in the starting XI.

One would suspect that Rooney, still a vehement competitor, would hold Mourinho in contempt, but it seems as if the striker has accepted that Mourinho’s emphasis on speed, strength and dynamism going forward will reduce his time on the pitch from here henceforth.
