Jose Mourinho explains Marouane Fellaini substitution against Watford

Jose Mourinho’s decision to bring Marouane Fellaini on for the last 20 minutes against Watford FC came as a consequence of Manchester United not scoring a third goal to kill the game off.

Anthony Martial got Man United’s second on the hour mark and we continued to be in total control of the match after that point but to sure up the midfield Mourinho replaced Mata with Fellaini to help nullify any aerial threat Watford provided as they chased the game.

Ultimately, every decision was vindicated by the win and speaking about the game Mourinho said: “We could kill the game with more goals but we didn’t so I thought, if we don’t kill it one way, by scoring a third goal, I am killing it by bringing on Marouane Fellaini for stability in midfield; to deal with the direct football to Troy Deeney and Stefano Okaka. We did very well and it was very much deserved.”

So much was said about Mourinho’s style of play before his move to United and whether we would become a team obsessed with intense defending to the point where our attack was limp but it couldn’t be any further removed from the reality.

Mourinho’s United side have created the second most chances in the Premier League this season (327) and that is already more than the total of Louis van Gaal‘s side (312) when only three teams created less than us. United are attacking with verve and style, it’s just our poor finishing keeping us from being further up the table at the moment.

To his credit, Mourinho is managing Fellaini perfectly at the moment by only bringing him on towards the end of games when we need a change. Due to that, Fellaini is now an asset to us rather than a hinderance and that’s down to Mourinho changing his fortunes.

On a final point as well, Mourinho put out a wonderful attacking team from the start against Watford and for me that shows his intentions – attack, attack, attack. That’s the United way. You know what? Something tells me I’m into something good…www
