Rooney, Carrick and Jones missing from Manchester United training for St.Etienne

Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick and Phil Jones were all missing from Manchester United’s training session ahead of Thursday night’s clash with St.Etienne.

Both Rooney and Carrick were unused substitutes during Man United’s 2-0 win over Watford at the weekend while Jones has missed the last few Man United games due to an injury he picked up against Hull City.

Jose Mourinho played Paul Pogba in a deeper midfield role against Watford instead of playing Carrick and if the 35-year-old is missing on Thursday then Pogba may well be used in a similar position again.

Jones’ absence is balanced out by the return of Marcos Rojo and with Eric Bailly now back in the side, Mourinho has plenty of options at centre-back.

As for Rooney, he isn’t part of United’s best starting XI at the moment but as it is a European fixture Mourinho may have wanted to turn to his more experienced players to ensure United head to France next week with an advantage. We’ll find out in the press conference whether or not he has suffered an injury.
