Bayern Munich financial partner Jan-Christian Dreesen confirms Man United’s €100m bid

Bayern Munich’s financial partner Jan-Christian Dreesen has confirmed that an £85m bid was launched by Manchester United for Thomas Muller.

It was widely reported that Louis van Gaal, during both summer windows at Man United, had launched a bid to secure the German’s services.

The 27-year-old ended up signing a new contract with Bayern, but has recently registered a level of disgruntlement at his lack of game time this season.

And according to Dreesen, there has been concrete interest from United in recent times.

“There really was such a thing [an offer of more than €100m for Muller from United],” he said. “Then came a fax from England. For us, however, a sale of Thomas Muller was never discussed.

“If a player fits us, we would be stupid to give him a short-term prospect of a record profit and to weaken him.”

Dreesen did not note which window saw United make a move for Muller, but one suspects he is referring to the summer of 2015 – a time that saw van Gaal, fail to secure the services of Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale, alongside the German World Cup winner, in relatively high profile fashion.

And with Zlatan Ibrahimovic showing no signs of slowing down, coupled with the continued development of Marcus Rashford and potential arrival of Antoine Griezmann over the summer, it is unlikely that Mourinho will reignite this particular flame.
