Jose Mourinho explains Henrikh Mkhitaryan absence against St.Etienne

Jose Mourinho has confirmed Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s absence from Manchester United’s squad to face St.Etienne was due to illness.

The Armenian midfielder wasn’t part of Man United’s match-day squad for their Europa League knockout clash and fans were immediately concerned as to whether he had picked up an injury like Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney had this week.

However, Mourinho moved to allay those fears when asked ahead of the game and it sounds like it may simply just be a well earned rest for Mkhitaryan who has been our heartbeat going forward in the last couple of weeks.

Mkhitaryan’s been ace for United after what was a rocky start to life in Manchester and his importance is underlined by how much better we look with him in the starting line-up. It will be interesting to see how United cope without his pace against St.Etienne, Mourinho will certainly be looking towards Martial to shine.

There is no word yet on whether Mkhitaryan will be fit to face Blackburn Rovers this weekend but that may have been a game Mourinho intended to rest him for anyway, so he may well not feature again for United until the away tie against St.Etienne next week.
