Jose Mourinho provides fitness update on Mkhitaryan, Carrick and Rooney

Jose Mourinho is unsure whether Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney will be available to face Blackburn Rovers on Sunday.

Rooney and Carrick both had minor muscular problems while Mkhitaryan’s absence was down to illness which led to the Manchester United trio all missing the 3-0 win over St. Etienne.

With one eye on the return leg in France next week, Mourinho may well be deciding to not risk bringing any of them back in for Blackburn.

He said: “I want them to be fit, I want them to be ready. Against St Etienne, if they were, they would be involved because I need everybody.

“I am not sure they will be ready because the game is in two days but let’s see.”

When it comes to injuries, I’m confident in the quality of the depth in United’s squad that the last thing I want to see is any player getting rushed back to fitness. We’ve done that previously in recent years only to aggravate further issues and it’s just an unnecessary risk at this time.

Fans were worried about how good we’d be in attack without Mkhitaryan against St. Etienne but the return to form of Anthony Martial has given us another brilliant option in attack. That means there’s less pressure on Mourinho to bring Mkhitaryan back into action until he’s ready.

Mourinho has confirmed there will be changes made against Blackburn on Sunday but whether that will see the return of any of these three players isn’t known yet. If I was Jose, I wouldn’t take the risk.
