Jose Mourinho has labelled Ashley Young as his personal Man of the Match following Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup fifth round.
Danny Graham opened the scoring for the hosts after 17 minutes, only for Marcus Rashford to restore parity ten minutes later.
Substitutes Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic then combined to grab a late winner and a subsequent quarter final date with Chelsea next month.
But Mourinho, speaking to MUTV after the game, was quick to highlight Young as the standout performer at Ewood Park.
“Our boys were really good, it is impossible to do better than what we did,” he said. “The boys were in the game – everyone, even people who are not playing so much.
“In my opinion, Ashley Young was for me the Man of the Match. His was an absolutely amazing performance. The game was difficult, it was open, Blackburn were waiting for the last minutes to try to win it, so it was very important for us to score and be in a safe position.”
This was another game that saw Young, despite lacking game time this season, deliver a truly powerful, dedicated performance, only to then see somebody else make the headlines.
But make no mistake: the Englishman has been perhaps Man United’s must consistent performer this season. He hasn’t been called into action on a regular basis, but every display has been hallmarked by energy and discipline.
Young may not be a ‘spectacular’ United player, but nobody can doubt that the 31-year-old understands what it means to wear the badge.
