Saint Etienne 0-1 Manchester United: Player ratings

by Leo Nieboer

Sergio Romero 6 – Had very little to do once again but the birthday boy will go home smiling after picking up another clean sheet.

Ashley Young 7 – Another diligent, indefatigable display from one of Manchester United’s most reliable influences this season.

Eric Bailly 6 – Kept ASSE”s attacking frontier at bay all evening but will head home disappointed after picking up a questionable – but still very much needless – red card in the second half.

Chris Smalling 7 – Displayed signs of the defensive prowess that characterised the Englishman’s last season under Louis van Gaal. Wonderfully composed and powerful.

Daley Blind 6 – An assured, untroubled influence at left back all game but failed to offer much potency on the front foot.

Michael Carrick 7 – He couldn’t quieten ASSE’s home support, but the Englishman made light work of taking the sting out of the game with another composed, dictatorial performance.

Paul Pogba 7 – Made the entire game feel like a training session with what was an astonishingly composed, nonchalantly confident display.

Marouane Fellaini 6 – Provided some much-needed firmness alongside Carrick but struggled to contribute going forward.

Juan Mata 6 – Quietly took control of proceedings from the first whistle, smartly marauding in between the lines and producing a sublime assist for Mkhitaryan.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan 6 – Ghosted in between ASSE’s back four to smartly deflect home the opening goal and produced a number of smart touches, only to be forced off with what looked like a hamstring strain after just 25 minutes.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic 6 – Added precision and power to Manchester United’s attacking frontier, holding up the ball with his usual bravado, only to go missing in front of goal.

Marcus Rashford 7 – Came on in the first half and unceasingly harassed ASSE’s back four with a series of powerful runs down the left hand side.
