Rene Meulensteen has revealed Henrikh Mkhitaryan was on Manchester United’s radar when Sir Alex Ferguson in charge at Old Trafford.
The Armenian moved to Man Untied from Borussia Dortmund in the summer and after a slow start, has really impressed, cementing his place in the first-team as one of Jose Mourinho’s best players.
He’s been in outstanding form in recent months and added to his tally after he found the opening goal of the game against Saint Etienne in the Europa League Round of 32 second-leg clash.
Speaking about his talent, Meulensteen insists he’s pleased that Mkhitaryan has been able to find his feet.
“When he was much younger, before he joined Dortmund, we were actually looking at him. I remember the name very clearly,” he said.
“We felt he was not ready but he is, in my opinion, a typical Man United player. He is quick, he is creative, he has got assists in him, he has got goals in him.
“I am really, really pleased he has found his feet and is performing to his best.”
After initially struggling to adapt to life in England, Mkhitaryan was left on the sidelines as Mourinho worked on his form at United, but since his return he’s been directly involved in 11 goals in his last 16 games, with six goals and five assists.
Mkhitaryan has been one of our standout performers and there’s no doubt we’ll see him in the League Cup final against Southampton if Mourinho deems him fit enough.
