Eric Cantona: Jose Mourinho is the right manager for Manchester United

by Leo Nieboer

Eric Cantona has insisted that Jose Mourinho is the right manager for Manchester United, labelling the Portuguese as a “winner.”

The Portuguese endured a difficult start to life at Old Trafford, with his side’s inability to kill of games leaving them nine points adrift of fourth spot by early December.

Since then, however, Mourinho’s men have won 15 of their last 19 games, succumbing to just one defeat during that time.

And Cantona, when asked whether he would ever consider managing Man United, was quick to sing the praises of the job’s current occupant.

“If one day I become a manager it will be for Manchester United,” he said.

“But you have a great manager in Mourinho. He’s a winner. He’s won so many things. I’m sure he will win many things for United.”

The fact that United have only lost twice since September demonstrates, above anything, that this current side is slowly but surely morphing into a classic Mourinho team.

For too long, United were something of a coasting unit, gloomily shifting from one approach to another, with players never really receiving a chance to cement themselves in any particular position.

But Mourinho has ruthlessly rectified this issue: he has settled on an ideal midfield core, established a defensive hierarchy, reinvigorated players like Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Anthony Martial, handed various wingers chances to impress and, of course, addressed United’s discernible lack of goalscoring prowess through Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
