Jose Mourinho gives injury update ahead of Southampton League Cup final

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Henrikh Mkhitaryan would not feature in Sunday’s League Cup final against Southampton but revealed that Michael Carrick would be available for the clash with Claude Puel’s side.

Mkhitaryan limped off during Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Saint Etienne with a hamstring problem and Carrick also came off with a calf problem later on.

The 54-year-old, speaking after the game, noted that the pair would not be ready in time for United’s visit to Wembley.

However, Mourinho confirmed earlier today that Carrick would play against Southampton but noted that Mkhitaryan would not feature, whilst also confirm that a decision over Phil Jones‘ fitness would be made on Saturday.

Losing Mkhitaryan for the biggest game of the season is indeed a bitter pill to swallow. The Armenian’s creative zeal and raw speed going forward at No.10 could have created numerous problems for the Saints.

But at least the 28-year-old can step aside for a number of superb alternatives – Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata will all be vying for a chance to occupy a place on the wing on Sunday.

Losing Carrick, however, could have been a different story. Nobody in this current squad could ever master the role that the Englishman has mastered so fully over the last few years, and his presence on Sunday serves as a monumental boost.
